Gentle Giants Roam Long Way from Home

in the past 5 years a corner of south Somerset resembled deepest India following the arrival of a herd of water buffalo

Paul Richards had 50 of the giant beasts on woodentop farm where they maked themselves at home. Although big they were very friendly.

Paul (Snapper) said: ‘they are incredibly placid animals and a real joy to look after.. so may have them back in the future.. so watch this space.

He obtained them from an associate in north Somerset, Frances wood, who started to farm water buffalo as an alternative to traditional cattle during the foot-and-month crisis in 2001. The two farmers have now formed a partnership and hope to increase sales in an already flourishing market.

Snapper said the water buffalo are farmed under strict bio-dynamic standards, which are even more stringent than organic rules. The principles of bio-dynamic farming incorporates the cycle of the land, the seasons and even the path of the moon, and many farms see it as the future, as consumers become more discerning.

Although buffalo milk, cheese and meat is slightly more expensive than from less unusual cattle, they are selling well. Not only is the meat tasty, it is low in fat, making it a healthy and popular alternative. The milk is used to make mozzarella cheese.

Snapper, a campaigner for bio and organic products is confident demand will continue to grow. ‘The meat is tastier than anything else I've tried and the London market is crying out for it,’ he said

His next big project is to build his dream home, an agricultural bio-dwelling, relying on solar heating and power and fully in tune with the environment. It is planned to be completed within two years, and he tends to open the house to local schoolchildren.

Planning permission is still under discussion, although the first stage has been approved for a log cabin that will eventually be used as a classroom.

‘I want to teach local children the benefits of looking after nature and the environment’ said Snapper
